October 3, 2008
We made a great showing at the Orlando Sentinel's 101 Best Award Ceremony on October 2nd, taking first place awards in two categories: Best Vegetarian (1st Place), and Best New Restaurant (1st Place)! Chain restaurants dominated, but we squeaked a win anyway! Thank you to all for your support of our new establishment. View the complete winners list for all categories in the print edition of the October 3rd "Calendar" section of the Orlando Sentinel.
And speaking of support, please remember the importance of your dollars to local, independent businesses. With economic news worsening every day, it's no surprise that we are all tightening our belts, and cutting unnecessary spending out of our budgets. Remember to support your favorite local independent eateries, retail shops and service providers with the dollars you do decide to spend. Dollars spent at local independents are circulated back through our local economy as they are paid out to local employees, local vendors, and local landlords. It is more likely that these local recipients will in turn spend their dollars locally, and the resulting reciruclation strengthens our community's viability by creating insulation from macro-economic conditions and joblessness.
On a lighter note, we are pleased to announce the gift certificate winners* for October: Mike Barr has won a $25 gift certificate in the new subscriber drawing, and Elisabeth Staudigl has won a $10 gift certificate in the existing subscriber drawing. Congratulations to both, and thank you to all for your continued support of our establishment. (*Drawing rules are available online.)
Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you at the restaurant!
Sincerely,
Laina & Kelly Shockley

Orlando is lucky to have a community-run non-profit FM radio station in its midst, which is, of course, WPRK, 91.5FM. Support local radio by participating in WPRK's 2008 marathon - "The Blob". A variety of events are going around all over town from October 6th-12th - and proceeds will be used for station improvements, permanent Internet broadcasting, and education. Participate at Ethos by buying a Blob Cookie - 25¢ of each 75¢ Blob cookie will be donated to WPRK to further their cause! ps... and listen to Laina & Kelly on the air at WPRK every Thursday from 10am-Noon!
The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) has been selected for our October 10% Day, scheduled for Saturday, October 11th. ARFF is devoted to promoting respect and compassion for non-human animals through a variety of activities, including legislative activity, animal rescue, public outreach and education. To have 10% of your Ethos check donated to the ARFF, simply print the Event Flyer (.pdf) and present it on the 10% Day when placing your order.
After a successful test run in September, Pierogi Night is now a permanent addition to our monthly calendar! In fact, it was a little too successful - after spending 4 hours making pierogi, we sold them all in 45 minutes. Join us for our next Pierogi Night Tuesday, October 14th - this time you'll be able to add a vegan Kielbasa for +$2.50, and we'll have plenty to go around!
Halloween is one of our favorite holidays! Aside from the fun of costumes, tricks, treats and harvest-time foods, it's one of the few ancient holidays to survive our modern times with its traditional interpretations intact.
To celebrate, we're throwing a Halloween Party traditional-style, complete with costumes, contests, games & prizes, fortune telling, spiced cider, candied apples, hay bales and more! Post Records is organizing the music, featuring live performances by Tooth & The Enamels, Swirling Bees, Kingsbury, The Still Voice, and Jeff of Mumpsy.
7pm: Kids Costume Contest, 9pm: Carved Pumpkin Contest (carve your pumpkin at home, and bring it in to compete!), 11pm: Costume Contest. Traditional costumes and pumpkins are encouraged, and, no vulgarity, please!
We'll send out the complete details later this month, but mark your calendars, and start working on your costume and pumpkin designs for the contest!
